HRH The Princess Royal,
Anne

HRH Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise of Edinburgh was born on August 15th 1950 in Clarence House to the parents Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. Her maternal grandparents were Their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. She had a surviving maternal great-grandmother, Her Majesty Queen Mary, the consort of King George V. Anne had an elder brother who was 21 months her senior, Prince Charles of Edinburgh. At the time of her birth, she was third in line to the succession of the throne, after her mother and elder brother. After her mother's succession, she rose to second.

In 1952, Anne's mother became Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, after her grandfather, King George VI died. Her mother's coronation was in 1953, which Anne did not attend because of her young age. She did appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace and in a royal portrait. The princess's great grandmother, Queen Mary, had died a few short weeks before the coronation.

When her mother became Queen, the young Anne was now styled as the Princess Anne of the United Kingdom.

In 1960, Anne had received a new younger brother, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York. In 1964, she received another brother, Prince Edward.

In 1961 and 1964, she received her only two first cousins, Viscount David Linley and The Lady Sarah Chatto from her aunt, Princess Margaret the Countess of Snowdon.

On November 14th 1973, Princess Anne married Captain Mark Phillips. The couple were believed to be offered a peerage, meaning an earldom, but refused so that their children would not have any title whatsoever.

Mark and Anne's marriage produced Peter and Zara Phillips, in 1977 and 1981.

Princess Anne has an interest in Equestrianism. Her daughter, Zara, is also keen on this sport.

In 1987, Anne received the title 'Princess Royal'. This title is used for the eldest or only daughter of a sovereign of the United Kingdom. There can only be one Princess Royal at a time. Anne could not have this title before 1965, as her maternal great aunt, Mary the Princess Royal, Countess of Harewood had already owned it until her death.

In 1989, Mark and Anne made their intentions clear that they were separating. The marriage was under strain for many years. By 1992, they had officially divorced and later in 1992, the Princess Royal married Sir Timothy Laurence. Anne and Timothy do not have any children together.

In March of 2002, in the midst of her mother's golden jubilee celebrations, Anne's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen mother had died at the age of 101. Anne's aunt, Princess Margaret, had died also in February 2002 at the age of 71.

In 2008, Anne's son, Peter Phillips, married Autumn Phillips and gave Anne her first grandchild,  Savannah Anne Kathleen Phillips in late 2010 and her second grandchild, Isla Elizabeth Phillips in  mid 2012.

In 2011, Anne's daughter, Zara Phillips, married Mike Tindall. The couple received their daughter Mia Grace Tindall in early 2014.

Princess Anne is currently 11th in line to the succession of the throne, after her 3 brothers, and six nieces and nephews, and one great-nephew.
